West Berkshire Feel Good Fortnight Gets Flying Start

It’s time to start limbering up for West Berkshire’s ‘Feel Good Fortnight’ which gets off to a flying start at Newbury Racecourse on Saturday (18 April).

A host of activities are planned for the day including a chefs’ challenge in Newbury market place, a talk on growing vegetables in your garden, a family bike ride and the opportunity to get your blood pressure checked at Newbury Town Hall.

The start of ‘Feel Good Fortnight’ co-incides with Saturday’s Spring Trials Day meeting at Newbury Racecourse which has given organisers a stall for the day to promote the various activities taking place over the next two weeks.

“This is not just about exercise,” says Feel Good Fortnight co-ordinator Liz Large. “What is usual for one person is unusual for another. It is about encouraging people to think about their lifestyles and trying something new.”

The chefs’ challenge will take place in Newbury market place between 9am and mid-day with local chefs cooking up a variety of healthy dishes from ingredients sourced at Newbury market.

In the afternoon a family bike ride will start from Newbury town centre while in the evening, BBC gardener, Pippa Greenwood will give a talk at Newbury Library on ‘Great Green Veg.’

“We are delighted to support ‘Feel Good Fortnight which is a fantastic initiative and one we hope will really take off,” says Lisa Ward, Sponsorship and Community Projects Manager at Newbury Racecourse.

“We are expecting a good gate for Saturday’s meeting so it will give organisers an opportunity to get information across to a local audience. There is a lot going on.”

Newbury Rotary Club, as part of their support for Stroke Awareness Day, will have a mobile health check unit at Newbury Town Hall on Saturday, staffed by qualified nurses, on hand to take people’s blood pressure.

Events for the remainder of the fortnight include African drumming workshops, free gym sessions, ‘Singing for the Brain’ classes, tap dancing, walks, volleyball, reflexology and massages. Full details can be found at www.westberkshirepartnership.org/fgf
