On Bank Holiday Sunday 29th May 2011, a 15,000 strong crowd of music lovers were out in force as Newbury Racecourse launched itself for the first time as a standalone concert venue, Newbury LIVE.
Grammy™ Award winning hit-maker and Newbury racegoer Rod Stewart took to the stage as the very first act to perform and rocked concert goers with his hits including Do Ya Think I'm Sexy, You're In My Heart and Sailing, during a dazzling two hour set. With a fully seated capacity and private boxes and restaurants sold out, the concert demonstrated Newbury Racecourse’s versatility as a venue for a large non raceday event.
Stephen Higgins, Joint Managing Director, Newbury Racecourse said, “Newbury LIVE is an excellent example of how we are successfully diversifying and expanding the racecourse as a premier host venue in the South of the UK.
"We are delighted with the success of tonight’s event and we hope to build on this year on year with the aim of developing the racecourse to become a destination 365 days of the year for the Newbury and Southern region as well as the horseracing community and beyond. It’s the beginning of an exciting initiative as Newbury Racecourse as a venue could host similar events of up to 30,000 in seats and standing combined.”
Since their launch in 2007, Newbury Racecourse has become well known for its summer season of Party in the Paddock events which fuse quality horseracing and world class music acts, demonstrating the growing potential Newbury has as a high profile concert venue.
Carly McKenzie, a concert goer commented on the Newbury LIVE concert: “The atmosphere was amazing – seeing the whole crowd standing, swaying and singing along with Rod in the open grounds of a racecourse was an experience not to be missed!”
