Mary Hare Primary School Enjoys A Day at the Races – March 2009
Children from Mary Hare Primary School, Newbury enjoyed a picnic lunch and day at the races on Friday (20 March).
All the children from the school in Greenham, which educates profoundly deaf children from all over the UK, were invited by Newbury Racecourse into one of the pavilions for a day’s racing.
Mary Hare Primary School were invited to Newbury Racecourse as part of the Racecourse’s community programme which aims to support local charities and associations as well as work with schools and local sports and arts groups.
   
Newbury Pancake Challenge - February 2009
The annual Newbury Pancake Race, held in the Market Place, saw two teams entered from Newbury Racecourse.  This hugely popular race attracted a large crowd and some competitve entries! Well done to NRC Team A who made the final, and came a very creditable third.  All involved had great fun and lots of money was raised for charity.
Bronze Medalists from NRC: Hayley Wickham, Tim Burnett, Cilla Osgood and Julie Key.
 
   
  Newbury Charities - November 2008
Newbury charities are thousands of pounds richer after the latest string of exit collections at Newbury Racecourse. Generous race-goers have provided a huge boost to many local charities who have been invited to hold bucket collections at the end of race meetings.
 
   
  Argyles Nursing Home - October 2008
Residents of the Argyles Nursing Home in Newbury enjoyed a flutter at the races
when a new social programme was started for residents. The Home wrote to Newbury Racecourse to see if it would be happy to provide their first port of call and residents were given a free box for the afternoon which allowed them a grandstand view of the track. They then enjoyed some afternoon tea and cakes.
   
BIOPAC TUMBLERS - September 2008
Newbury Racecourse has introduced new drinking tumblers which mean race-goers can enjoy a drink without worrying about vast amounts of plastic waste.
The tumblers, made by environmental packaging specialists, Biopac, are one hundred per cent biodegradeable and made from sustainable cornstarch-derived polylactic acid.
“They are perfect for outdoor events,” says Martin Bunch of Newbury Racecourse. “It is great we can demonstrate our commitment to environmental concerns in such a practical way. 
 
   
Parson’s Down Infant School - August 2008
Children at Parsons Down Infant School, Thatcham, made front page news when their designs were used for the racecard cover at one of Newbury’s busiest meetings – the family meeting on 3 August. The cover design was given as a class project for the children after they were visited by the Harry the Horse, the Newbury Racecourse mascot.
   
Story Time at the Races - August 2008
Librarians read children’s stories on board CLIVE, the West Berkshire Council bus during a family race meeting at Newbury. It was all part of West Berkshire Libraries campaign to promote reading among children and their parents. The aim was to encourage parents to read regularly to their children as well as promote reading sessions which are taking place in West Berkshire libraries during the school summer holidays.
 
   
HMS Illustrious Crew - July 2008
Crew from ‘HMS Illustrious’, one of only two aircraft carriers in the British naval fleet, took a well-deserved break at Newbury Racecourse following their four month deployment in the Indian Ocean. During their time at sea, the crew managed to save some money and decided they wanted to treat themselves to a great day out – and decided on a trip to the races. Newbury Racecourse was happy to invite them racing and introduced the crew to race-goers during racing.
 
   
West Berkshire Spokes - June 2008
West Berkshire cyclists held their annual bike bash at the Racecourse to celebrate the start of National Bike Week. West Berkshire Spokes organised the bike bash and held its AGM at the Racecourse. Newbury MP, Richard Benyon, who cycled 350 miles around the Normandy battlefields to raise money for wounded servicemen returning from Iraq and Afghanistan, gave a talk on his charity cycle ride.
 
   
Phoenix Centre - May 2008
The ground staff were grateful for some additional help when members of the Phoenix Centre helped prepare flower beds and spruce up the parade ring ahead of racing. The opportunity for these volunteers, who all have learning disabilities, to put their gardening skills to practical use in a working environment at the Racecourse was welcomed by everyone.
 
   
Readibus - April 2008
Passengers of West Berkshire’s Readibus service enjoyed a scheduled stop at the Racecourse after being invited to a day at the races. The group were treated to afternoon tea and for many it was their first visit to the Racecourse – despite being life-long Newbury residents. Readibus operates a fleet of 20 buses in the West Berkshire area - providing around 10,000 journeys each month for elderly and disabled people.
 
   
Dingley Family Play & Therapy Group - April 2008
The charity raised over £11,000 by dancing their socks off to the best of 80s music at a fund-raising disco at the Racecourse. The Newbury branch of the charity – which is based at Newbury Racecourse and supports children with additional needs and disabilities - celebrated its tenth anniversary in 2008. Shoulder pads, Adam Ant make-up and large hair styles took the floor to raise money for a great cause.
 
   
Willows Primary School - January 2008
Children from the school in Greenham, Newbury concluded their design & technology week with a head-turning display of work at the Racecourse. The children had spent the week designing and making hobby horses, tabards and head-dresses out of recyclable materials and were then invited by the Racecourse to show off their work in the parade ring ahead of a race meeting.
